National Legacy

Commissioned for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the Discobolus artwork monument serves as a vital pillar of the New South Wales cultural landscape. Crafted by the esteemed Australian artist Robert Owen and inspired by Myron's ancient sculpture, this work represents a profound synthesis of classical Greek ideals and Australia's vibrant sporting character.

The Discobolus was made possible from the generous donations of Australian Hellenes and Phil-Hellenes from individuals, families, communities, clubs and business on a National Level and abroad. Beyond its aesthetic merit, the monument acts as a historical conduit connecting antiquity with our contemporary national identity. Located at Sydney Olympic Park, it stands as an enduring cultural legacy and our integration with Australian society that we are all extremely proud of.

The Discobolus was unveiled by His Excellency the Honourable Sir William Deane, AC, KBE, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia on Sunday 13 August 2000.
